Oh Yeah Tool Kit
This is a mechanic which I absolutely love!
You know those magazine Q&A’s you read in newspapers or see on Instagram? I get so inspired from learning about different people’s journeys of transformation, especially from those who come from vastly different industries (air pilots and the such). Entrepreneurs have a wealth of stories, especially founders who put themselves out in the world to try and solve a problem. Their journeys are often tales of hardship, perseverance and some luck, and they stick in your brain.
Here’s an exercise for you: Take one inspiring Q&A you’ve read, and start asking the same questions they’ve been asked to future yourself. As if the same journalist was asking you, your 3 years future, about your purpose and what it’s serving. For example, entrepreneurs are often asked these type of questions:
Answering these questions as your future self, as if you were going to appear in a magazine about your craft, trade or role, is like reverse vision-boarding. It’s like producing your own press release of what you want to say to the world. I’ve leant on this mechanic a number of times when building a programme that will be released to the public, not on myself, but how I would want a public-facing leader to talk about it. The project’s vision, its purpose…its meaning. It forces me to really sharpen what it is, through sheer means of articulation.
It’s a pretty powerful mechanic - I think you’ll be surprised at how much it helps express and define where you want to be. Of course, it also aids clarity in what you need to do to get there.
